Green Key is an eco-labeling scheme for the tourism industry, which started in Denmark in 1994 and is now assigned to approx. 1500 companies in over 25 countries.
The idea was– and is– to reward hotels or other tourist businesses that make an extra effort for the environment and thereby make environmental work into something positive.
It seems that the concept is useful because Denmark’s Green Key has exported outside the country. France was the first to adopt the scheme in 1998, and later Green Key became part of the environmental education organization FEE (Foundation of Environmental Education), which also manages the well known Blue Flag program.
Today there are about 1500 companies marked with Green Key in over 25 countries – mostly in Europe, but also in countries like Japan, Puerto Rico and Morocco.
